
Why Your Infrared Heater Actually Dies (And How to Stop It)
If you’ve ever had an infrared heater give up on you way too soon, it usually comes down to two things: water getting inside or high heat eating away at the guts of the machine. When you see an IPX5 waterproof rating on a spec sheet, don’t just assume the outer shell is doing all the work. The real battle is won or lost at the lead-wire seal. If that seal cracks when the heater goes from ice-cold to scorching hot, you’re in trouble.
Where things usually go wrong
Most heaters fail at the exact spot where the electrical wire meets the heating element. In the cheaper stuff, this is often just a bit of glue or some shrink-wrap. It looks fine at first. But once you start cycling the heat, those materials shrink and crack. That’s when the moisture creeps in. It starts a slow process of carbonization, and before you know it, you’ve got a short circuit. We do things differently. We use high-temp silicone resins and compression-fit gaskets. It’s a tighter, more professional seal that stays put even when the tube is running at peak temperatures.
Dealing with the “Wash-Down” Reality
IPX5 is great because it means the unit can take a water jet from any direction. In a real industrial shop, that usually means someone is hosing everything down. The tricky part? The seal has to be a contradiction. It needs to be flexible enough to move as the metal expands with heat, but tight enough to keep pressurized water out. If the sealing process is rushed, you get “micro-leaks.” You won’t notice them immediately. But over time, they let oxygen and moisture nibble away at the internal contacts. You’ll start seeing the wattage drop or the heat becoming erratic. Then, it just burns out.
A quick tip on installation
Here is the thing: a tighter seal usually means the lead wire is a bit stiffer. Don’t try to bend those wires at a sharp angle right where they meet the seal. If you force a tight bend, you risk popping the waterproof barrier. Just give it a nice, gentle radius when you’re wiring it up. It takes an extra inch of space, but it’s the only way to make sure that IPX5 rating actually lasts.
