
Keeping Your Class 100 Cleanroom Actually Clean
If you’re running a Class 100 (ISO 5) environment, you already know the nightmare of a failed particle count. The last thing you need is your heating elements shedding flakes or off-gassing right into your workpiece. Standard resistive heaters are notorious for this—they peel and spit oxide layers when you least expect it. That’s why we stick with high-purity synthetic quartz infrared lamps. Why quartz? It comes down to the materials. We use fused silica with almost zero impurities. This stops that annoying “spitting” you get with cheaper glass. But the real magic is in how the heat moves. Instead of warming up the air around it, these lamps use short-wave infrared radiation. Think of it like sunlight hitting your skin on a cold day; the heat goes straight to the workpiece via photons. Since you aren’t churning the air, you don’t get those turbulent currents that kick up dust and ruin your specs. Getting it installed We usually pack a lot of power into a small footprint. It’s efficient, but it means you have to be smart about your chassis. If you go with a high-voltage setup, you’ll get a lightning-fast ramp-up. Just make sure your cooling system can handle the load, or your housing is going to get way too hot. And please, don’t cut corners on the connectors. Whether you’re using R7s or SK15 bases, the fit has to be dead-on. A loose connection isn’t just a reliability issue—it creates tiny electrical arcs. Those arcs produce ozone and carbon particles, and that’s a one-way ticket to a failed inspection. A few things to watch out for Here is the catch: quartz is fragile. If you slam the power on and off too aggressively, the thermal shock will kill the lamp. I always suggest a stepped ramp-up. It takes a few extra seconds, but your filaments will last way longer. Also, these tubes are incredibly sensitive to the oils on your skin. One single fingerprint during install creates a “hot spot.” Eventually, that spot becomes a weak point and the tube burns out prematurely. **Do yourself a favor: always wear lint-free gloves.**Every single time.
