
Getting the Heat Right for CNT Growth
When you’re growing carbon nanotubes, it’s easy to get obsessed with raw wattage. But here’s the thing: it doesn’t matter how much power you’re pumping into the system if that energy never actually hits the wafer. You don’t need more power; you need a better way to aim it. That’s why we use gold-coated reflectors. It’s all about stopping the waste.
Why Gold?
If you’re using standard quartz heaters, you’re probably losing a ton of energy to the chamber walls. It’s basically like trying to heat a room with an open window. We swapped that out for high-purity gold coatings on the housing. Why? Because gold is incredible at bouncing infrared radiation back where it belongs. It beats out aluminum or polished steel every time. Instead of heating up the entire vacuum chamber, the photons get shoved right back toward the wafer. It makes the energy focus much tighter. Plus, your cooling water system doesn’t have to work nearly as hard, and you’ll notice you hit those growth temperatures a lot faster.
The Trade-offs (And what to watch for)
You can’t just throw a reflector in there and call it a day. You have to match your lamp wattage to the actual shape of the reflector. We usually pair these with short-wave infrared (SWIR) sources. They cut through the gas phase better and “grip” the wafer material more effectively. But a word of warning:be obsessive about your alignment. Because gold concentrates heat so well, even a tiny slip in the lamp’s position can create a hot spot. One minute you’re growing nanotubes, and the next, you’ve got “burnt” zones on your wafer. Make sure your mounting brackets are rock solid. No wiggle room.
The Payoff
The best part? You can hit your target temps using way fewer watts. Your power bill goes down, and the whole tool runs cooler. It also stops the chamber from drifting thermally, which makes keeping a stable environment a breeze. Just keep those gold surfaces spotless. A little bit of dust or a smudge of oxidation will kill your reflectivity and tank your heat output. Keep it clean, and it just works.
